Woman Finds A ‘Mermaid’s Purse’ On The Beach — And It Hatches In Her Hand

While walking along Pass-a-Grille Beach in Florida after a storm, wildlife photographer Brianna Varner expected to find interesting seashells or driftwood. Instead, she stumbled upon something she’d never forget.

Among the seaweed and debris, Varner noticed what looked like a dried leaf. Curious, she picked it up — but quickly realized it was something unusual.

“This is kind of weirdly shaped,” Varner recalled thinking.

What she held was a mermaid’s purse — the protective case that surrounds shark, stingray, and skate eggs. Usually, when these wash ashore, they’re empty, the baby inside having already hatched underwater. But this one looked intact, with sealed ends and a rounded shape.

Varner held it up to the sunlight and gasped. A tiny embryo was moving inside.

Knowing it wouldn’t survive if left to dry out, she gently tucked the case into a nearby tide pool. As she kept exploring, she found several more, carefully placing each one back in the water.

Then she picked up one that felt different. It was firmer, heavier — and when she tried to shine light through it, nothing came through.

As she carried it toward the water, she suddenly felt movement. To her amazement, the egg case began to split open.

One year ago I became the proud mom of a clearnose skate!!!✨ We were walking the beach looking for shells when we noticed a mermaids purse, egg case, in the wrack line. I figured it was dead until we put the flashlight under it and noticed it was still moving and you could even see the developing gills! We ended up finding half a dozen or so, all washed up, with the last one being a little bit harder and darker than the rest. As I was began walking it back out into the water, it started to move in my hand and all the sudden I noticed the face was looking up at me. It took me a second to process what was happening but I quickly stuck it in the water. The poor thing began getting flipped around by the waves so I gently scooped it up and walked it out into deeper water where it quickly disappeared into the sand! It was magical to see the eggs in different stages of development and I felt so honored the little skate hatched it my hand instead of just moments earlier in the sand. 🥹🤭🥰 @bbb33nnn #florida #tampa #tampabay #stingray #skate #egghatching #ocean #marinelife #stpete #animals #crazy #motherhood

“All of a sudden, I look down and a little mouth is looking at me,” Varner said. “It was so jarring at first, because I was like, ‘What am I even looking at?’”

Before she could fully process what was happening, a tiny baby skate wriggled free, right in the palm of her hand. She waded into deeper water to protect it from the rough surf and released it gently.

“It just immediately dropped to the sand, which is exactly what its instincts would be telling it to do,” Varner said. “It was a really cool moment where I was like, ‘Oh my God. I think it’ll be OK.’”

🔎✨ Marine Mystery: The Case of the Unidentified Mermaids Purse! 🧜🏼‍♀️👛 Mermaids purses are the egg cases of certain shark, skate, and ray species! Here in Tampa Bay, skates are the only animals to form mermaids purses which was lucky for me because skates lack a stinging barb and one of the eggs HATCHED IN MY HAND! I don’t think I will ever get over the moment I became a mother 🥹😂 In reality I feel responsible for all of the eggs we found that day and we did our best to place them in safe spaces where they have the best chance of survival! Have you ever found a mermaids purse and do you know what creature made it? I would love to travel to California and search for shark purses in the tide pools 🤭🦈🌊 #marinelife #MarineMystery #Florida #TampaBay #StPete #Skate #Stingray #MermaidPurse #EggCase #BeachCombing

Later research confirmed that the little survivor was a clearnose skate.

Varner kept the empty mermaid’s purse as a keepsake, a reminder of the rare moment she witnessed new life begin.

Her experience is also a powerful reminder for beachgoers. “There’s a lot of things that are on beaches that we don’t realize are alive or important,” she said.

Thanks to her curiosity — and kindness — one tiny sea creature got the chance to grow up in the wild.

✨This storytime is way overdue! Let’s rewind to the day I accidentally became a mom to a baby clearnose skate 🦈🐚 It was my first time ever finding mermaid’s purses on a St. Pete beach and we didn’t just find one… we found almost a dozen AND ONE HATCHED IN MY HAND 😭 I still think about this magical day all the time, so here’s the full story of how I found these incredible little babies. Also, if any tattoo artists wanna design a piece based on the baby stake coming out of the egg, please reach out!! I need this tattooed on me forever!! @Ben #Florida #loveisland #mommy #motherhood #birthstory #Stingray #Skate #MermaidPurse #egghatching #tattoo #summertime #storytime #viralvideo #thedodo
