‘Twin’ Brothers On Death Row Get A Second Chance — Just Hours Before It Was Too Late

When Madeline, a volunteer at a Houston-area shelter, walked past a kennel last week, she noticed two frail puppies huddled together. They looked so alike they could have been twins — and every move they made was in perfect sync.

With their tiny paws pressed against the bars, the brothers did everything they could to catch someone’s attention.

“These two are peas in a pod,” Madeline later wrote on Instagram. “They did everything together.”

Then she learned something devastating: both pups were on the euthanasia list. If no one stepped in within hours, their time would be up. Desperate to save them, Madeline posted a video online, praying for a miracle.

That miracle came in the form of Summer, a seasoned dog foster mom. The moment she saw the video, she knew she had to act. She reached out to Sunnyside Street Dogs, asking if they could help.

Even though intake was technically closed, the rescue couldn’t say no.

“They’re just adorable,” said Annie Hawthorne, president of Sunnyside Street Dogs. “They’re like little twinsies. Their mannerisms are the same.”

The brothers — now named Bennie and Jett — were so thin that shelter staff originally thought they were only 10 weeks old. In reality, they’re closer to 6 or 7 months. But under Summer’s care, their health is improving every day.

“They’re playing with each other, running around, chewing on their toys,” Summer said. “They’re very active.”

Though inseparable, their personalities shine in different ways. “Jett has a laid-back, cuddlebug personality, whereas Bennie is vivacious and outgoing,” Summer explained. “They really balance each other out.”

Now, all they need is a forever home. Once they’ve been fully vetted and neutered, Bennie and Jett will be ready for adoption through Sunnyside Street Dogs.

“I just want someone who is patient, loving, and willing to adopt them together and keep them together forever,” Summer said. “Someone who will treat them like true family.”

After everything these brothers have survived, Bennie and Jett only want one thing — to spend the rest of their lives side by side, playing and resting in a home of their own.
