In April, a woman named Caryn logged onto Facebook and stumbled upon a heartbreaking post — a group of dogs had been found abandoned, struggling to survive in miserable conditions on a neglected property nearby.
“They were found abandoned, living in squalid conditions,” the Humane Society of Mason County (HSMC) shared in a video recounting their story.
As an HSMC volunteer, Caryn knew she couldn’t stand by. When local authorities didn’t respond quickly enough, she decided to go to the scene herself.
What she found broke her heart: six dogs trapped in a muddy, trash-strewn yard, surrounded by dangerous debris.
Among them were two especially timid boys, Hank and Scooby, who stared out through the fence, silently pleading for help.
Eventually, authorities arrived and gave Caryn permission to organize the dogs’ rescue. Finding safe places for all of them wasn’t easy.
One pup, Henry, was taken in by People for Animal Care and Kindness. HSMC stepped up to care for the rest.
Brutus soon found a loving foster home, while Scooby, Hank, and their friends Tucker and Ringo were welcomed by a generous foster mom named Donna.
Tucker and Ringo were quickly adopted, but Scooby and Hank’s journey took longer. Both dogs were deeply affected by their traumatic past.
“Both boys were incredibly timid around new people, new experiences, and loud noises,” a representative from HSMC told The Dodo. “But they thrived when surrounded by other dogs, who helped boost their confidence.”
Rescuers knew it would take a special family to earn their trust — and earlier this month, Scooby’s wait finally ended.
“After 182 days with HSMC, Scooby has found his forever family!” the representative said. “He’s bonded wonderfully with his new canine brother, and his people are giving him all the time he needs to settle in.”
Now, all eyes are on Hank, who continues to blossom in foster care.
“Hank has made tremendous progress,” the representative said. “He’s gentle when playing with his older canine sister, who has arthritis, and he loves racing around the yard with his younger playmates.”
Rescuers are hopeful that Hank’s perfect match is just around the corner.
