When Luna was adopted in September 2019, she didn’t just gain a family — she claimed one.
From day one, Luna decided that her humans were her responsibility. She follows them everywhere, keeps a close eye on their routines and makes it very clear that no one goes anywhere alone.
“She loves going for walks with us,” Luna’s mom, Heather Lucier, told The Dodo. “She’ll lead the way and make sure we’re going the direction she wants. People in the neighborhood tell me it’s the cutest thing they’ve ever seen.”
During 2020, when the family spent most of their time at home, Luna took her job as protector very seriously. Whenever Lucier went to pick up the kids’ free school lunches, Luna trotted right alongside them — crossing the street, circling the school and escorting everyone safely back home.
“I like to think she was making sure we were OK and that we came home again,” Lucier said.
So when the kids returned to in-person school, Luna naturally assumed her duties hadn’t changed. The family lives just around the corner, making it easy for Luna to walk her human siblings to school whenever she can. Staff and students quickly got used to seeing her show up every morning, and she became a bit of a local celebrity.
At least — until Luna decided walking them to school wasn’t enough.
One day, Luna attempted to take her role a step further by sneaking into the building to attend class with her kids. Unfortunately for her, everyone already knew who she was.
Not long after, Lucier’s phone rang.
“When I saw it was the front office, I freaked out,” Lucier said. “I thought one of my kids was hurt or sick.”
Instead, the caller had a very different concern.
“They said, ‘We love Luna and don’t mind her hanging out, but she keeps trying to follow people into the school,’” Lucier said. “I apologized a million times and threw on a jacket and ran over before she got herself into real trouble.”
Thankfully, the school staff was amused rather than upset.
“They were laughing and told me she was incredibly sweet — just a little too determined to get inside,” Lucier said.
When Lucier arrived, she spotted Luna lingering near the doors she’d been trying to slip through. The moment Lucier called her name, the cat acted as if nothing unusual had happened at all.
“I was still a bit away when I called, ‘LUNA!’” Lucier said. “And who comes running? Luna — tail straight up, meowing happily, prancing across the grass like she hadn’t just been caught in the middle of a school infiltration.”
Lucier coaxed her home with the promise of food, and Luna accepted defeat — at least for that day.
When the kids got home, their mom told them the whole story, and they loved every second of it.
“My son laughed and said he wished she’d come to his class,” Lucier said. “They have a board with class pets, and he thought it would’ve been way cooler to have Luna there instead of just a picture.”
For now, Luna’s school career remains on hold.
But given her determination — and her deep devotion to her kids — no one doubts this won’t be her last attempt to sneak into class. 🐾
