One afternoon in Malaysia, Nur Hamizah Had was walking through her backyard when a glimpse of white fur under her car caught her attention.
Curious, she bent down to investigate — and what she saw broke her heart.
Huddled beneath the vehicle was a kitten in heartbreaking condition. She was skin and bones, covered in sores, missing most of her fur, and smelled like she hadn’t been clean in weeks.
But when Hamizah looked into her large, pleading yellow eyes, she couldn’t walk away.
“She looked so desperate and helpless,” Hamizah told The Dodo. “I told myself, ‘If she survives, I’ll do everything I can to love and care for her.’”
Despite the odds, the frail kitten had enough strength to respond. When Hamizah placed a cardboard box in front of her, the kitten climbed right in and lay down — as if she knew she was finally safe.
Hamizah brought her inside and named her Meimei.
The next morning, Meimei visited the vet. Weighing just 4 pounds, she was battling multiple skin infections and open sores.
Her condition was serious, but with a clear treatment plan and plenty of patience, Hamizah got to work.
With round-the-clock care, good food, and unconditional love, Meimei slowly began to recover. Her appetite returned.
Her wounds healed. Her once-bare skin filled in with a thick, soft coat.
After five months, Meimei was unrecognizable.
Now a healthy 13-pound cat, Meimei is thriving in her new home. She spends her days eating, napping, and playing — though she’s still a bit shy around strangers.
Her life of fear and struggle is firmly behind her.
“She’s happy now,” Hamizah said. “She’s become part of the family.”
Hamizah hopes Meimei’s story shows just how powerful love and care can be — and that no street cat is too far gone to be transformed into someone’s beloved companion.
