For weeks, a lonely dog in Los Angeles had the same heartbreaking routine: she wandered the streets, stopping at house after house, peering through gates as if asking, “Can I come in?”
Neighbors sometimes left food and water, but what she really wanted was a family.
Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, has answered countless calls about strays in need, but when she saw a photo of the desperate pup gazing through a gate, her heart broke. She knew she had to help.
Hall and her rescue partner, Mary Nakiso, rushed to the neighborhood and quickly spotted the dog, later named Makena. They set up a trap and waited for hours, nearly succeeding—until an angry neighbor kicked the trap, scaring Makena into the night.
“She bolted like lightning,” Hall recalled. “We had no choice but to go home and try again.”
The next morning, hope returned. A kind neighbor, Janet, had been leaving food and water for Makena, and the frightened pup had started to trust her. That night, Janet called Hall with an update that made her heart race:
“She’s literally following me and my dog everywhere.”
Hall rushed back, knowing this was the moment. With the help of another neighbor who offered his yard, they gently guided Makena to safety.
To their surprise, she didn’t need the trap this time. Instead, the kind neighbor scooped her up in his arms.
“I cried tears of joy the whole drive back,” Hall said.
At first, Hall placed Makena in a crate in her car, but soon she pulled over, moved her to the front seat, and wrapped her in blankets.
“I looked over and saw her tiny nose peeking out,” Hall said. “She finally knew her month of homelessness was over.”
At Camino Pet Hospital, Makena was given a full exam and a much-needed bath. Amazingly, she was healthy — and ready to begin the next chapter of her life.
Now safe in foster care, Makena is thriving. She cuddles, sleeps soundly, and enjoys the love she longed for during her days of wandering the streets.
“Makena is such a love,” Hall said. “For the first time in so long, she can finally sleep with both eyes closed.”
Makena is still waiting for her forever home, but until then, she’s surrounded by kindness — no more lonely nights, no more peeking through gates. Just warmth, comfort, and the promise of a family to call her own.
