Dog takes bullet to save soldier’s life. Soldier returns favor and adopts her

While serving in Afghanistan, U.S. military combat dog Layka was shot four times by the enemy at point-blank range. Despite her injuries, she still attacked and subdued the shooter, saving her handler and the other members of the team.

Seven hours of surgery and the amputation of one leg saved her life. Her handler, Staff Sgt. Julian McDonald, fought hard to adopt her and she's now become a part of his family.

Check out the video below! …and please SHARE Layka’s story if you fell in love with this military dog, too!

  1. Thank you so much for giving her a wonderful home! One small point… the FB post calls her a GSD, but I really think she may be a GSD/Malinois cross. Do you think that may be true? Regardless, she’s a good, good girl!

  2. This is why you never abuse an animal because they will lose trust in you and if you trust them they trust you ,I mean they take a bullet for you ,you do the same for them thats why i want to work with K-9’s when I’m older or go into military

  3. Saving the dog was the least thing this person could have done..putting dogs in danger just so that these people can live are cowards.. so stop making it look like a big deal about adopting the poor animal

  4. Thank you both for your service and Sacrifices. Thank you fir adopting your battle buddy. Layka is beautiful inside and out.
Prayers for both of you to have a long, happy and healthy retirement together.
I agree the strongest most agressive working K9s become the best family members. They become calm playful furbabies.

  5. This is how it should be this beautiful girl Layka saved he handlers life and the other members of the team and was shot losing her leg, this was his dog to look after as was her duty to him, I’m glad Layka made it home and was adopted by her handler, she has served her country well
