After finishing a long volunteer shift at her local animal shelter, Mary Nakiso stepped outside, ready to head home — but something by the door stopped her in her tracks.
Sitting against the wall was a blue plastic bucket she’d never seen before. When she peeked inside, her heart sank.
“Tiny, helpless puppies had been dumped behind the shelter, up against the wall, inside a blue bucket,” wrote Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29. “Little teeny, tiny babies — left like trash.”

Two fragile puppies looked up at Nakiso, standing on their hind legs, desperate for help but too small to climb out. No one knew who had left them there or how long they’d been waiting.

Without hesitation, Nakiso scooped them up and rushed them inside.
At Camino Pet Hospital, the shelter team gave the pups immediate medical attention — and soon realized just how urgent their rescue had been.
Both puppies were showing early signs of parvovirus, a dangerous and often deadly illness in young dogs. One of the babies also had a torn cornea that would eventually require surgery.

They were named Wonton and Beetles, and though they were fragile, they were finally in good hands.
“They’ll finally be safe, warm, and cared for,” Hall wrote. “Sweet little angels — everything’s going to be okay now.”

Over the following days, the tiny duo began to fight back. Wonton, the tan pup, responded quickly to treatment, growing stronger and more playful each day.
Beetles, the black puppy, is still recovering and will soon undergo surgery to remove her injured eye — but she hasn’t let that slow her down.

For the first time in their short lives, both puppies are surrounded by love, warmth, and gentle care. And once they’re fully healed, they’ll be ready to find forever homes — hopefully together.
“It’s so hard to believe someone could just throw them away,” Hall told The Dodo. “They’re just little babies starting out their lives.”
Thanks to one volunteer’s quick action, those lives are now filled with hope.
