Shelter Staff Spot a “Weird-Looking Dog” — Then Realize He’s Not a Dog at All

At the Greenville Humane Society in South Carolina, mornings usually start the same way — rows of wagging tails, excited barks, and curious meows greeting the staff as they walk through the kennels.

But one morning, something very unexpected was waiting for them.

“We saw a weird dog today,” the shelter joked in a Facebook post.

Only… it wasn’t a dog at all.

When one staff member passed by the kennels, she stopped in her tracks. Sitting proudly on top of one of the enclosures, watching everyone with calm confidence, was an opossum.

“So picture this — it’s a totally normal day at the shelter. Dogs are barking, cats are judging us, everything’s business as usual,” the shelter wrote. “Then one of our staff members walks by the kennels … and there he is, just hanging out like he owns the place.”

The surprise guest seemed completely at ease — as if this had been his plan all along.

“The opossum was certainly unexpected,” a shelter spokesperson told The Dodo, “but luckily, we’ve got some professional critter catchers on staff who didn’t mind scooping him up and returning him to the woods across the street!”

Though safely released back into nature, staff have a sneaking suspicion this wasn’t his first visit.

“We’ve never caught an opossum actually in our kennels before,” the spokesperson added. “But judging by how plump and healthy he looked, we have a feeling it’s not his first time sneaking in for a midnight snack!”

It’s safe to say this little opossum left quite an impression — and maybe even a few amused shelter pets wondering when their unusual “roommate” might drop by again.
