When a stray dog named Ducky arrived at Lancaster Animal Care Center in Lancaster, California, staff expected the usual nerves that come with shelter life. Instead, they were met with a dog who seemed determined to stay hopeful.
“He wasn’t letting the environment get to him at all,” said Evelyn, a volunteer at the shelter. “He was just so optimistic.”

Ducky’s sunny personality wasn’t the only thing that stood out. During his intake exam, staff noticed something unusual about his front paws — they pointed outward at almost a 90-degree angle, giving him a walk that looked a little like a duck’s waddle.
At first, Evelyn assumed it was a genetic quirk. But there’s also a chance Ducky’s feet developed that way after being confined in a small space for too long. Even after a full veterinary workup and X-rays, doctors couldn’t pinpoint the cause.
What they could confirm was the most important part:
Ducky wasn’t in pain.
“He doesn’t seem uncomfortable at all, and it’s not affecting his quality of life,” Evelyn said.
During the exam, vets also discovered Ducky had a microchip. When they contacted the listed owners, they were shocked by the response — the family said they didn’t want him back.
Evelyn was crushed.
“He’s so goofy and affectionate,” she said. “He loves everyone. I just don’t understand how someone could give him up.”

When Evelyn learned Ducky needed a short-term foster, she didn’t hesitate. She spent a full day spoiling him with walks, playtime, and plenty of chicken.
“He just melts into your arms,” she said. “You can’t help but want to cuddle him nonstop.”
Soon after, Minnie’s Mutts Dog Rescue stepped in and placed Ducky with a long-term foster family. There, he’s been soaking up warm baths, soft beds, and endless naps — all while continuing to charm everyone he meets.
Now, Ducky is officially available for adoption through Minnie’s Mutts Dog Rescue. After everything he’s been through, Evelyn hopes his next chapter is filled with stability, love, and someone who sees how special he truly is.

“The day I hear he’s been adopted is going to melt my heart,” she said. “He’s really one of a kind.”
