Shelter Dog Reaches Through Kennel Bars Hoping for Connection — And It Changes Her Life

When Mac was found wandering the streets of Pasco, Washington, a kind stranger brought her to Tri-Cities Animal Shelter, hoping she’d get the second chance she deserved.

In a shelter filled with dogs all hoping to be noticed, Mac found her own unique way to stand out — by gently extending her paw through the bars of her kennel, inviting anyone who passed by to hold hands.

And it worked.

“She was one of my absolute favorites,” volunteer Julie Saraceno told The Dodo. “The first time she pawed at me through the bars, I was instantly hooked.”

Mac, a black Lab mix with a big heart and bright spirit, quickly won over the shelter staff and volunteers. Known for her affectionate nature, intelligence, and love of walks, she never stopped trying to make a connection.

It wasn’t long before she discovered her little paw trick also earned her extra treats and attention — and she happily used it every chance she got.

Hoping to help Mac find her forever home, Saraceno filmed a short video of her reaching out through the kennel and posted it online. The response was overwhelming.

Soon, messages from across the country came pouring in from people moved by Mac’s sweet gesture — and one woman decided to make the drive all the way from Montana to meet her in person.

As soon as they met, it was clear: Mac had found her person.

“I cried happy tears,” Saraceno said.

Now, Mac no longer needs to reach through cold metal bars for love. She’s finally where she belongs — in a warm home, surrounded by people who adore her.
