At 7 years old, Peanut had already seen more than her fair share of change. The sweet, gray-faced pit bull arrived at the Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC) after being transferred from another shelter.
No one knew much about her past — but it didn’t take long for everyone to fall in love with her.
“Despite it all, she’s remained silly, sweet, and full of love,” HSBC wrote on Facebook.
Peanut quickly revealed her favorite thing in the world: stuffed toys. The moment someone handed her a plush toy — a hamburger, a crocodile, a lamb — she would proudly carry it around, refusing to let it go. In the noisy shelter, the soft toys seemed to bring her peace.
“She loves them all,” HSBC staff said in a video for The Dodo. “We always make sure she has a variety to choose from.”
Peanut didn’t just hoard her stuffies — she shared them. Every time someone walked past her kennel, she’d rush to the door, toy in mouth, offering it as if to say, ‘Hi, I’d like to be your friend.’
She even insisted on taking her toys outside during potty breaks, happily trotting around the yard with her favorite plush tucked between her teeth.
But despite her gentle soul and joyful spirit, Peanut was constantly overlooked by adopters. People passed her by for younger dogs, never realizing how much love she had to give.
“Peanut has been with us for some time, and we truly don’t understand why,” the shelter wrote. “She greets everyone at her kennel door with pure joy.”
Then, one day, everything changed. HSBC posted a video of Peanut and her beloved stuffies — and it touched thousands of hearts online. Soon after, a family walked into the shelter and said the words everyone had been waiting for: “We want to adopt Peanut.”
Before she left, Peanut picked out one last stuffie to take on her journey home. With her new toy in her mouth and her tail wagging wildly, she trotted out of the shelter toward her new life — and her new family.
“Before leaving our shelter, she picked up one last toy from us,” HSBC shared. “And she went straight to greet her new family and brother.”
After years of waiting, Peanut finally found the forever love she’d been offering to everyone all along.
