In a quiet corner of Schiller Park in Syracuse, New York, a gray-faced dog lay tied to a picnic table, his head resting on the pavement. At first glance, he seemed forgotten — just another old soul lost in the world. But beside him, a handwritten note taped to a nearby post told a different story.
“I’m a good boy,” it read. “I’m about 17 years old. My name is Max. My owners can’t take care of me no more. Please help me!”
The plea was simple, but full of sorrow.
When word of Max’s situation reached local animal advocates, they didn’t hesitate. Members of the Cuse Pit Crew along with members of Syracuse Police and Dog Control rushed to the park to help the elderly pup. Though the sight was heartbreaking, they knew it wasn’t too late to give Max the love and care he deserved.
“He was just lying there, all alone,” Cuse Pit Crew shared in a Facebook post. “We know it’s hard to look at, but this is what abandonment can look like.”
Max was soon brought to an emergency veterinary clinic, where he received much-needed medical attention. Though he was thin and clearly neglected, Max remained gentle and trusting. Once cleared by vets, he was transferred to HumaneCNY, where his healing journey continued.
With each passing day, Max’s strength returned. His appetite grew, his eyes brightened, and his sweet personality began to shine through.
“He loves to run around,” his foster parent shared. “His eyesight and hearing may not be perfect, but his nose works better than ever — he can sniff out a treat from a mile away! He enjoys walks, being around people, and just soaking in the world at his own pace.”
Though Max’s past is uncertain, his future is wide open. Now fully on the mend, he’s searching for a home where he can spend his golden years surrounded by comfort and kindness.
“Max will do best with someone who understands the needs of senior dogs — especially those with limited vision and hearing,” said Maureen Davison, executive director of HumaneCNY. “He’s such a goofball and still full of love.”
Max may have been left behind once, but thanks to a community that refused to turn away, he’s been given a second chance.
