In an abandoned lot in Fresno, California, a dog named Leroy sat trapped in a deep cement trench, staring up with hopeful, sorrowful eyes — waiting for help that, thankfully, was on its way.
A nearby photographer, exploring the area, noticed Leroy peering up from the hole and quickly realized the dog was in trouble. Without hesitation, they contacted animal control.
Responders arrived swiftly and carefully climbed down to retrieve the stranded pup. Despite his ordeal, Leroy remained calm and gentle — his eyes lighting up the moment he realized someone was there to save him.
Leroy was taken in by Compassion Without Borders, a rescue organization dedicated to helping animals in need. Staff were immediately touched by his warm, trusting nature.
“He was just the sweetest boy from the start,” said Christi Camblor, the group’s executive director and cofounder.
Camblor, who’s also a veterinarian, began fostering Leroy at home while attending to his medical needs. But it wasn’t long before she and her husband realized that this wasn’t just a temporary arrangement — it was the beginning of something permanent.
“It was love at first sight,” Camblor said. “I knew deep down we wouldn’t be able to let him go.”
About a month later, they made it official — Leroy had found his forever family.
Now, Leroy lives a joyful life filled with sunbathing, playtime with his dog siblings, and loving attention from his humans. He even enjoys starring in fun photoshoots, always flashing his signature smile.
“He’s playful, affectionate, and just so full of life,” Camblor said. “He’s exactly where he belongs.”
Leroy’s story is a powerful reminder of how a little compassion can transform a life.
