Curled into a tight ball on bare dirt, a small brown puppy named Pixie waited in silence. She was tied to a pole in a remote, forgotten stretch of land, with only a few ferns offering shade.
She couldn’t go far. She couldn’t search for food or water. And as the days passed, her tiny body grew thinner — her ribs painfully visible beneath her fur.
Alone and exhausted, Pixie was running out of hope.
Then, at last, she looked up — and saw her hero.

“An animal control officer found her in a remote area — basically the middle of nowhere,” Emily Brizzee told The Dodo.
Brizzee, who runs Brizzee Animal Rescue in Haslet, Texas with her husband, knew immediately that Pixie needed help. The moment she heard the puppy’s story, she stepped in — and soon, Pixie was finally safe.

When Brizzee met her for the first time, the sight was devastating.
“Pixie was in terrible condition. It was beyond heartbreaking,” Brizzee said. “But she had fight in her eyes, and we knew she’d pull through.”

At first, Pixie was understandably cautious. Trust didn’t come easily after everything she’d endured. But little by little, the scared puppy began to relax. She learned that the hands reaching for her were kind — and that she was finally safe.
“She began to trust us and open up,” Brizzee said. “She’s become very attached to our 8-year-old son and sleeps with him at night.”

Now, Pixie is gaining strength, confidence, and joy with each passing day. She’s still with her rescuers, surrounded by warmth and love, and there’s no rush — she’ll begin searching for her forever family when she’s ready.
For now, Pixie is exactly where she belongs.
“She gives us kisses and tail wags every morning,” Brizzee said. “She’s extremely food motivated but gentle, not food aggressive, and she’s learning how to play and feel safe more every day.”
