Pit Bull Gently Cares for Her Blind Chicken Sister, Always Bringing Her Favorite Toys

When Peri the chicken was just a few months old, her family discovered she was losing her sight. Despite countless vet visits and treatments, they learned that blindness was inevitable.

Determined not to let it hold her back, Peri’s family adjusted their home so she could live as normal a life as possible — rugs that made noise under her food bowls, low roosting bars she could safely climb, and even a cozy ottoman by the TV so she could “watch” alongside her people.

“She became the sweetest, most cuddly chicken,” Peri’s mom, Christa Hubbard, said. “We even hired a chicken nanny to help when we weren’t home.”

But Peri had more than just her human family looking out for her. Her pit bull brother, Taj, quickly sensed that his feathery sister needed extra care. At just 3 years old, he naturally stepped into the role of her guide.

“He was her seeing-eye dog,” Hubbard explained. “For eight years, they did everything together — napping, sunbathing, exploring. He always made sure she was safe.”

When Taj passed away in 2018 after a long battle with cancer, Peri was heartbroken. The two had been inseparable, and without him, she felt lost. Hoping to heal everyone’s hearts, the family eventually adopted two pit bull puppies.

One of them, Gracie, formed an instant bond with Peri. Their connection grew quickly, reminding everyone of the special friendship Peri once shared with Taj.

But Gracie added her own sweet twist: she began bringing Peri toys.

“Gracie will bring Peri a toy, place it in front of her, and wait,” Hubbard said. “When Peri is outside in her yard, Gracie waits by the fence. When Peri is on her ottoman ‘watching’ TV, Gracie brings her a toy. First thing every morning, she checks on her friend.”

To Gracie, the toys are more than just playthings — they’re comfort, love, and reassurance that Peri is never alone.

Now, the blind chicken and her devoted pit bull sister are rarely apart. Gracie has taken it upon herself to keep Peri safe and happy, just as Taj once did.

“I believe this is where Taj left off,” Hubbard said. “Two sweet souls found each other.”
