One evening in Kentucky, a local pastor arrived at his church to prepare for service — and found an unexpected surprise waiting on the steps. A cardboard box, with something scribbled on the side, caught his attention.
Curious, he approached — and realized the box was filled with tiny, helpless lives.
Inside were six newborn puppies. A note attached to the box read: “Puppies free to a good home. Mixed with blue nose pit bull; breed of the father unknown.”
That was all the information he had about the little pups, but he knew they needed help immediately. He quickly contacted the Powell County Animal Shelter.
“It was dark and going to be a very cold night,” Teresa Stidham of Powell County Animal Shelter told The Dodo. “The puppies looked healthy and seemed to have just been separated from their momma.”
The tiny pups were taken to a temporary foster home for a few days before returning to the shelter.
Now, the staff is working hard to find a longer-term foster home — a challenge when caring for six newborns at once.
For the moment, the shelter is providing all the warmth, love, and attention they can to ensure the puppies grow up healthy and strong.
“We feel they would do even better with more one-on-one attention than we can provide here,” Stidham said.
Meanwhile, the shelter is also hoping to locate whoever left the puppies, in case their mother can be reunited with her litter. Until then, the little pups are safe, warm, and surrounded by care.
