A Heartbreaking Discovery
Halia’s journey began in a tragic place—alone, paralyzed, and surrounded by trash. She had spent days lying in water and debris, unable to move or fend for herself. Her condition was dire, but her spirit held on, waiting for someone to notice her plight.
When Donna Lochmann, Chief Life-Saving Officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, received the call about Halia, she immediately rushed to help. Upon arrival, Donna and her team were heartbroken to see Halia in such a state. Her back legs were paralyzed, and she could barely lift her head.
The team believed she had been hit by a car and had dragged herself as far away from danger as possible, finding refuge in some nearby bushes. Starving and scared, Halia desperately needed a lifeline.

Gaining Halia’s trust was the first step. Donna and her team approached her slowly, speaking gently to reassure her. Once they wrapped her in a warm blanket, Halia seemed to understand she was safe. She was carefully placed in their car and transported to the rescue facility.
