One evening, a man named Nic was driving to meet friends when he decided to call home and check in with his family.
While talking with his wife, he stopped at a red light and glanced across the street. That’s when he noticed something small and fluffy crouched near a gutter.
At first, he couldn’t quite believe what he was seeing.
But as cars sped past without slowing down, Nic realized the little figure was a kitten — alone and dangerously close to traffic.
“The other cars in the opposite lanes just drove right by her,” Nic said.
As the owner of several cats, Nic knew he couldn’t leave the tiny animal behind. His plans for the evening changed instantly.
“I told my wife I had to go,” Nic said. “I said I might be coming home with another cat.”
Determined to help, he turned his car around and headed toward the spot where he’d seen the kitten.
But the frightened baby had other ideas.
The moment Nic approached, the kitten darted under his vehicle and scrambled up into the engine compartment, disappearing deep inside the car where he couldn’t reach her.
Traffic continued rushing past as Nic popped the hood and searched for the tiny stowaway.
At first, he could still see her.
Then she slipped deeper into hiding.
“I opened the hood and watched her disappear into the wheel well,” Nic said. “It was frustrating and scary.”
Nic tried coaxing the kitten out, but she refused to budge.
Realizing he couldn’t safely retrieve her where he was, Nic faced a tough decision. With the kitten still hidden inside the vehicle, he carefully drove a short distance — about a block and a half — to the parking lot of his workplace where he could try again more safely.
Soon, one of his friends arrived to help.
While his friend kept watch over the wheel well where the kitten had disappeared, Nic carefully reached inside the tight space to free her.
Thankfully, the kitten had wedged herself into a spot where he could get a grip.
“Luckily she was stuck in there pretty tightly,” Nic said. “I was finally able to grab hold of her.”
After a tense rescue attempt, Nic gently pulled the tiny survivor free.
Miraculously, the kitten appeared to be in good shape despite being found alone on the street and then trapped inside a vehicle.
Nic decided to name her Chassis — a fitting tribute to the part of the car where she’d been discovered.
Soon after, he brought her home to meet the rest of the family.
Chassis wasted no time settling in. She quickly bonded with Nic’s wife and children, and before long she was exploring the house alongside her feline siblings: Porthos, Tofu and Susie, the family’s 18-year-old cat.
While she was a little shy around unfamiliar adults at first, Chassis gradually began relaxing in her new environment.
With her new parents, though, she’s completely comfortable.
“Now she’s much more relaxed with my wife and me,” Nic said. “She sleeps tucked into my armpit and has the loudest purrs.”
No one knows exactly how Chassis ended up alone near that roadside gutter that night.
But one thing is certain — if Nic hadn’t looked across the street at that exact moment, their paths might never have crossed.
What started as a simple drive to meet friends turned into a life-changing rescue.
And now, with the once-lost kitten curled up safely at home, Nic knows he made the right decision.
“I believe she has a pretty great life,” he said. 🐾
