Most dogs prefer to sprawl out on cozy beds or soft couches. But Bagels, a 34-pound keeshond, prefers something a bit more … compact.
Suitcases. Laundry baskets. Any small, cramped space she can wiggle into — especially if it smells like her dad.
“The smallest space Bagels has tried to fit into was probably a small carry-on suitcase,” her dad, Daniel Hwang, told The Dodo. “I had just unloaded some clothes, stepped away for a moment, and came back to find her curled up like a little croissant.”
Bagels came into Hwang’s life during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, when lockdowns meant long days spent together. Over time, their one-on-one bond grew strong — maybe too strong — and her quirky habit of nestling into tight, dad-scented spaces started to make a little more sense.
Eventually, life changed. Hwang’s girlfriend moved in — and brought cats into the mix. For Bagels, this meant learning to share both her home and her favorite human.
“At first, Bagels barked nonstop for nearly two days,” Hwang said, recalling the arrival of cats Celsius and Oyster. But once she got a closer look through the pet gate, her curiosity faded. “She sniffed them … and then walked away totally uninterested.”
With peace established, the animals divided up the household in a surprising way. Bagels kept her oddball baskets and suitcases, while the cats quickly claimed her oversized dog bed whenever she wasn’t using it.
And Bagels doesn’t seem to mind. At night, she sleeps curled up at the foot of the bed. In the morning? The cats are on the dog bed, and Bagels is back near her humans — exactly where she wants to be.
“She’s a keeshond, and they’re known as ‘Velcro dogs’ because they stick so closely to their people,” Hwang said. “That’s definitely true for Bagels.”
