From the day Jonathan was born, he and his cat Charlie were inseparable. They napped together, shared snacks, even took baths together — Charlie never left his side.
“Jonathan was the first baby Charlie had ever known,” Jonathan’s mom, Valerie, told The Dodo. “He took his role as protector very seriously.”

Last June, after 15 wonderful years, Charlie passed away. The whole family was devastated, but 6-year-old Jonathan felt the loss most deeply. He missed his best friend with all his heart and begged for a new cat — but Valerie didn’t feel ready.
“I kept telling him, ‘When it’s time for a new cat, Charlie will send one to us,’” she said.

Then, one afternoon in late November, a fluffy orange cat appeared outside their home. Valerie instantly sensed he was friendly. She sat down on the porch, and the cat climbed straight into her lap. They stayed like that for nearly an hour until a passing car startled him away.
Two nights later, he came back — and this time, Valerie made sure Jonathan was there.

“The moment my son met this fluffy cat, they were totally smitten with each other,” Valerie said. “He let Jonathan hug and kiss him right away. My son was overjoyed — we all were.”

The cheerful visitor began showing up every day, happily soaking up Jonathan’s attention. Valerie suspected he had a family somewhere, so she slipped a collar on him that read, “I love your cat” on one side and “Please call if you own this cat” on the other, along with her number.
Soon after, her phone rang.

The caller was a 69-year-old neighbor who lived on the next road over. She explained that the cat — named Garfield — had wandered into her life over a decade ago as a stray and decided to stay. Despite being deeply loved, Garfield still preferred an outdoor lifestyle and often roamed the neighborhood.
Garfield, it seemed, had a gift for finding the people who needed him most — including a little boy grieving his first best friend.

Garfield’s owner was delighted to learn he’d made new friends and happily offered to “share custody.” Now Valerie’s family gets to enjoy Garfield’s daily visits without worrying about taking him from the person he first chose.
“We’re absolutely his second family now,” Valerie said.

One day, Valerie knows they’ll be ready to adopt another cat. But for now, Garfield is exactly who they needed. Jonathan has already bonded with him so deeply — and it feels as though Charlie sent Garfield to keep his little brother company until the time is right.
