Earlier this month, Sergeant Brett Claxon of the Ohio State Highway Patrol spotted something alarming — a dog standing directly in a lane of traffic on a busy interstate.
Thankfully, drivers quickly slowed down, giving Claxon just enough time to guide the pup away from danger.
But once the trooper opened his patrol car door to offer the dog a ride to safety, something unexpected happened: the dog jumped right into the driver’s seat.
Body camera footage captured the heart-melting moment.
“You gonna be the trooper today?” Claxon asked with a chuckle as the dog made himself comfortable behind the wheel. “All right, you can be trooper today.”
Eventually, Claxon gently relocated his new co-pilot to the back seat. But the bond had already been formed — this was no ordinary rescue.
Wanting to help reunite the pup with his family, Claxon posted about the encounter on Facebook, hoping someone would recognize their runaway friend.
Soon after, the Ohio State Highway Patrol shared a happy update: the dog had been safely returned to his family.
While it’s still a mystery how he ended up on the highway, there’s no doubt his day turned out far better than it could have — all thanks to a quick-thinking trooper with a kind heart.
And for a few minutes, the dog even got a taste of life behind the badge.
