Giant Pit Bull With a Giant Heart Waits for a Family to See Past His Size

When Ace first arrived at Ventura County Animal Services, it was impossible not to notice him — all 103 pounds of him. At just 2 years old, Ace is a massive pit bull with an even bigger heart.

His former family had been caring for him temporarily on behalf of a relative and, after trying every option to find him a permanent home, they were left with no choice but to surrender him to the shelter.

Now, staff worry that his impressive size might make it harder for him to find the loving family he deserves.

Despite his intimidating appearance, Ace is the definition of a gentle giant. He adores other dogs, especially smaller ones, and his favorite activities are relaxing, exploring, and soaking up attention from people he trusts.

“Our concern is that, because he’s a 103-pound pit bull, some people might overlook him before giving him a chance to show just how sweet and gentle he really is,” Jules Hooper of Ventura County Animal Services told The Dodo. “We think he’s an absolutely beautiful boy who will steal the hearts of the right people.”

Ace has only been at the shelter for a few days and is still adjusting to his new surroundings. Right now, he’s more focused on making new dog friends than on interacting with people — but according to his previous caregivers, Ace is incredibly affectionate once he feels at home. His friends at the shelter are eager to help him settle in and find the forever family he’s been waiting for.

“Ace would thrive in a home with another mellow dog and a yard to romp around in,” Hooper said. “Because of his size, he can be strong on leash, so he’ll need an adult who can handle him during walks. But more than anything, Ace just needs a family who will love him.”

Ace is fully house-trained, crate-trained, and an overall well-behaved, quiet companion. He’s the ultimate laid-back buddy — he just needs someone to share that easygoing life with.

To help ease overcrowding, Ventura County Animal Services is offering fee-waived adoptions through January 8th. They’re urgently seeking adopters and fosters for their many animals — but they’re especially hoping to find a home for their gentle giant Ace by the end of the weekend.
