Electrician Finds Two Loyal Pups Living Alone in Abandoned House

While working on an old, abandoned home in Detroit, an electrician spotted two small figures watching him from the backyard.

As he approached, he realized they were puppies—huddled tightly together, wary and alone. One of them appeared to be injured. It was immediately clear they didn’t belong there.

Concerned for their safety, the electrician reached out to Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue. Within hours, Theresa Sumpter, the organization's founder and executive director, was on the scene.

The pups were frightened and kept their distance. Sumpter knew it would take patience—and a few treats—to earn their trust.

“It felt amazing to rescue them,” Sumpter told The Dodo. “At first, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to catch them both, since they were so hesitant and cautious. But with some sweet talk and tasty treats, they started to come around.”

After about 30 minutes, the pair—later named Mercy and Grace—were finally secured and placed safely into a crate. At the vet hospital, they were shy and nervous, unsure of their new surroundings. But their transformation came quickly.

“Just two weeks later, they’ve blossomed,” Sumpter said. “They’ve both come out of their shells and are doing amazing.”
