In March 2023, Adams County Pet Rescue (ACPR) welcomed a red husky who had been found wandering the streets of Othello, Washington. It was clear that at some point she’d had a home, and the staff hoped her family would come for her. Sadly, no one did.
They named her Luna and placed her in a kennel alongside their many other residents. But it didn’t take long for Luna to stand out — just 10 days after her arrival, the clever husky made a daring escape and wound up on the shelter’s roof.
“It’s happened again, except this time it’s a Husky on the roof!” ACPR shared in a Facebook post. “Maybe Luna’s climbing skills are why her owner decided not to come back for her.”
Perched confidently above the shelter, Luna scanned the world around her, perhaps hoping to spot a familiar face. Staff members quickly rushed to help her down safely, showering her with affection and promising her that her days of longing for freedom were numbered.
Determined to help Luna thrive, ACPR enrolled her in training classes. Over time, she became close friends with other shelter dogs and grew more trusting of the people around her. But while her heart opened up, no adoption applications came in.
Days turned into months, and eventually, Luna passed the one-year mark — making her one of the shelter’s longest residents.
Still, the staff never gave up hope. When ACPR launched a fostering program in partnership with the Ahtanum View Reentry Center in Yakima, Luna was the first dog they thought of.
“Today, Luna was chosen, and she is going to be perfect for the first dog because she’s outgoing and very friendly,” ACPR wrote in an update.
After more than a year behind shelter walls, Luna finally got her second chance. She met her new foster parents, Brianna and Justin, with an open heart and endless excitement.
“She is seriously the [chillest] Husky I have ever seen, and I don’t know how she had been at the shelter for over a year,” Brianna later wrote in an update shared by ACPR. “She is the biggest sweetheart, and everyone adores her!”
Now, Luna spends her days lounging on cool floors, snuggling with her foster family, and indulging in delicious treats — far from the noisy shelter she once tried to escape.
Her friends at ACPR are still working hard to find her a forever home, but until that day comes, Luna is finally safe, loved, and right where she’s meant to be — no rooftop escapes necessary.
