Five years ago, Reddit user ReindeerTiny4401 adopted a wrinkly little pup named Buddy from Dallas Animal Services (DAS).
A shar-pei, German shepherd and rottweiler mix, Buddy quickly became her constant companion. Life felt complete — until fate threw an unexpected surprise her way.
One day, while scrolling through Facebook, she stopped cold on a post from DAS.
The photo showed a dog named Candy, listed for euthanasia if no one stepped forward to adopt her. At first glance, Candy looked eerily familiar. With a closer look, the resemblance was undeniable.
“She looked just like my dog,” ReindeerTiny4401 wrote. “I immediately inquired about her.”
When she contacted the shelter, her hunch was confirmed — Candy wasn’t just any dog. She was Buddy’s littermate.
Adopted as a puppy by another family, Candy had recently been surrendered back to the shelter, her future hanging by a thread.
Without hesitation, Buddy’s mom rushed to the shelter to bring Candy home.
The transition wasn’t easy at first. Candy had spent much of her life outdoors, and she arrived at the shelter timid, shut down, and heartworm positive.
“She was so scared when I first picked her up,” her new mom recalled. “She ducked her head, never wagged her tail. You could just tell how hard she’s had it.”
But the moment Candy saw Buddy, everything changed. The two siblings seemed to recognize each other instantly, reconnecting as if no time had passed.
“They had a special bond instantly,” ReindeerTiny4401 wrote in a comment.

From that day forward, Candy began to blossom. “Within a few days, she started opening up and trusting us more,” her mom wrote. “She now wags her tail, has so much confidence, loves to play with her brother, and she knows that going outside is a sanctuary, not her home. She’s the best dog ever.”
Months later, Buddy and Candy are inseparable — best friends, siblings, and partners in play. Their reunion turned what could have been a heartbreaking ending into the start of a joyful new chapter.
“They’re best friends!” their mom wrote.
