When a property manager checked on an apartment after the tenants had been evicted, faint cries led them to the bathroom. What they discovered was heartbreaking — a small dog tied under the sink, weak, injured, and left behind with nothing but a bowl of Raisin Bran.
The pup, later named Autumn, had been trapped there for at least a week. A deep wound around her neck revealed she’d likely been restrained far longer. Desperate to get her help, the property manager posted on Facebook, hoping someone would step forward.
That call was answered by Kate’s Rescue for Animals, who immediately dispatched a volunteer.
Autumn was rushed straight to Monte Vista Small Animal Hospital, where the team carefully removed her collar and assessed her injuries. Surgery was the only option to save her life.
“She was super sweet from the start and just wanted to be held,” said Kim Dunn, a volunteer with Kate’s Rescue. “She’s been neglected for so long.”
Despite her emaciated body and dehydration, Autumn’s gentle spirit shone through. She survived the surgery, surprising the medical team with how quickly she perked up afterward.
A brief fever setback didn’t keep her down — soon she was resting safely with her foster mom, Christine Schamber, who is showering her with the love she’s always deserved.
For now, Autumn can’t be around other dogs as she heals, but she’s thriving in her foster home, cuddling with her toy giraffe and soaking up attention. Her resilience is remarkable — you’d never guess how much she’s endured by looking at her bright, happy face.
“She's just a happy little girl,” Dunn said. “She loves her toy giraffe.”
Autumn’s story could have ended under that sink, but instead, she’s been given a second chance. Soon, she’ll be ready to meet the forever family who will cherish her for the rest of her life.
