Dog Found Alone With a Heartbreaking Note on Her Collar Sparks Compassion Across Community

Earlier this week, a Good Samaritan in Tennessee came across a lonely dog wandering the streets. She still had a leash on and appeared to be recently cared for — but something wasn’t right. Concerned, they brought her to the McKamey Animal Center for safety.

The staff quickly fell for the sweet dog, now known as Lilo, and set to work making her feel safe and loved. But as they examined her collar, they found something that explained everything — a handwritten note from Lilo’s owner.

The message was short but devastating:

“My name is Lilo. Please love me. My mom can’t keep me and is homeless with 2 kids. She tried her best but can’t get help. I cost too much for her. She really loves me & I’m a great dog & love to be loved on. Please don’t abuse me.”

It was clear Lilo hadn’t been abandoned out of neglect — she had been given up out of desperation.

Deeply moved, the team at McKamey Animal Center took to social media to respond — not just to share Lilo’s story, but to speak directly to her mom:

“We are so sorry that you had to make the heartbreaking decision to leave Lilo behind. We know how much you must love her — it’s written all over your note. And we want you to know: Lilo is safe. She is being cared for and loved. We will keep her name, and we promise to find her a wonderful new home if you aren’t able to reclaim her.

But if you see this… please know we are here for you. No judgment. Just support. If there’s any way we can help you keep Lilo, we will.”

Miraculously, within days, Lilo’s mom was found — and she was invited back to reunite with the dog she loves so deeply.

While Lilo is now safe and surrounded by care, her story is a powerful reminder of the difficult choices many people experiencing homelessness are forced to make — especially those who have beloved pets relying on them.

“Abandoning a pet is illegal,” the shelter added. “But more importantly, it should never feel like the only option.”

They urge anyone in crisis to reach out. Local shelters can often provide support, and national resources like Feeding Pets of the Homeless exist to help pet owners facing housing insecurity.
