Dog Abandoned In Crate During Snowstorm Shivered Until A Stranger Heard Her Cry

Earlier this month, a brutal winter storm swept through Kansas City, covering the city in heavy snow and plunging temperatures to dangerous lows. In the early morning hours of January 5, an elderly resident was startled awake by frantic barking outside his front door.

Wondering who could possibly be out in such weather, he stepped outside — and the sight before him stopped him cold. Buried under snow, trapped in a crate, was a terrified dog fighting to stay warm.

Unable to lift the crate himself, the man immediately called KC Pet Project. Despite the icy roads and near-zero visibility, animal services officer Angel drove more than an hour to reach the scene.

“When I got there, I could see her shivering, but when she saw me, her tail wagged so hard it shook the crate,” Angel shared in a KC Pet Project Facebook post.

Angel quickly freed the trembling pup, bundled her up and rushed her to the shelter.

“[Angel] called the man who’d reported the situation to let him know the dog was safe,” KC Pet Project wrote. “He got a little choked up and said he believed divine intervention woke him up to save her.”

At the shelter, the pup received much-needed medical care, including a spay surgery and treatment for her cherry eye. Soon after, she was transferred to Missouri Pit Bull Rescue to continue her recovery.

“Amazingly, she was in really great health,” said Jennifer Roos, a volunteer adoption counselor with the rescue.

Volunteers named her Blair, after the winter storm she survived — and later learned that Angel, the officer who saved her, has a daughter with the same name.

When foster volunteer Katie Kramer saw Blair’s rescue photo, she instantly knew she needed to bring the sweet girl home.

Despite everything she’d endured, Blair showed nothing but love.

“Her favorite place to be is basically inside her foster mom’s body,” Roos joked. “She snuggles so hard.”

Kramer has been fostering Blair for two weeks, and in that time, Blair has blossomed.

“She's Ms. Personality,” Kramer told The Dodo. “She’s obsessed with my dog Lorax, loves everyone she meets, and is trying her best to win over my cat, Idgie.”

Blair is now ready for adoption through Missouri Pit Bull Rescue. If you’re interested in adopting her, you can submit an application here. She’d thrive in a home with another dog, though her enthusiastic nature may be too much for families with very young children.

“Sometimes, when we’re all snuggled on the couch, I think about how she was found,” Kramer said. “It makes me sad, because Blair loves being warm, dry and not alone. I want the very best life for her.”

Blair has survived unthinkable neglect — and now she’s waiting for the forever family who will fill the rest of her story with warmth and love.
