Judge Cicconetti of Painesville, Ohio likes to do things a bit differently in his courtroom.
He believes in trulymaking the punishment fit the crime, which often results in creative and unexpected sentences.
This past September, Alyssa Morrow pleaded guilty to animal cruelty. She left her dog, Moose, locked up inside her dirt-ridden house. For an entire week, Moose was all alone with no one to take care of him.
When he was finally rescued, his saviors were shocked and appalled by his condition. Moose’s fur was falling out.
He was starving and thirsty. Rather than throwing her in jail like most judges would do, Judge Cicconetti made Alyssa – Dog Abuser do something that many people would find much more repulsive.
First, he spoke on behalf of Moose, noting how frightened he must have been during his abandonment.
Then, Judge Cicconetti looked Alyssa – Dog Abuser right in the eyes and said.
“Maybe you should get a little taste of that, but I’m going to let you have a choice here, and the choice is I want you to live like Moose, and in order to do that I want you to go down to the county dump, to the landfill, and I want them to find the stinkiest smelliest god-awful odor place they can find in that dump and I want you to sit there for 8 hours tomorrow, to think what you did to that dog while you smell the odor. If you puke, you puke.”
Do you think the punishment fits the crime?

I like reading stories about this judge. I completely agree with these types of approaches towards justice and punishment However, I don’t think he quite went far enough. The poor dog was unable to “toilet” outside or have access to food and/or water as he should have. I think extending the punishment to make those sort of items a potential problem, especially the lack of being about to use the restroom and lack of access to food(have to concede and allow some water) would really have gotten the point across better. Jail? Perhaps, but jail is far more costly and this guy gets results.

Not sure 8 hours was enough, but it seems like many judges just give the abuser a slap on the hand and send them on their way. At least this one is trying to teach an empathy lesson with his punishment.

The judge is local here. He has issued many unique and fitting sentences. He always offers jail time instead. Her punishment wasn’t nearly enough.

I can’t believe she showed up wearing what she was wearing. She should have been forced to spend a week in the house she left the dog in without food for a few days. She by no means was starving, but she let her dog starve. I don’t think her punishment was good enough. The kid who stole the bike, should of had to wear a sign that said I stole a bike and I have to ride the whole parade route.
