“As Jose held him, I was able to pull stickers out of his mouth,” Shawn said. “He didn’t bite or make a sound.” All through the process, the mother coyote kept a watchful eye on her pup. “She knew what was going on,” Gwen recalled. “They were trying to save her baby.”
With the spines removed, Shawn, Gwen, and Jose examined the pup to make sure he was okay. Outside of a few scrapes and cuts, he looked to be in good shape. Once they placed him back on the ground, he ran straight to his mom—and just like that they were gone.
Moms may be protective, but they are also famous for their intuition, and it seems coyote moms are no different! Thank goodness that Gwen spotted the pup and that Shawn and Jose arrived so quickly to offer a hand.
