Construction Crew Spots Something Huge In A Trench — And Rushes To Help

When construction workers arrived at a job site in Queanbeyan, Australia, they didn’t expect to see anyone else there. But as they glanced toward a trench behind a retaining wall, they froze. Something big was trapped inside — and struggling.

Looking closer, the crew realized it was a kangaroo. He was injured, stuck deep in the crevice, and unable to climb out on his own.

“The kangaroo was stuck in a trench behind a retaining wall and had several injuries, making the rescue complex and dangerous,” Wildcare Queanbeyan explained in a press release.

Within minutes, four representatives from Wildcare Queanbeyan arrived to help. A veterinarian gave the kangaroo a sedative to calm him down, allowing rescuers to carefully lift him out of the trench and onto solid ground.

The exhausted roo was soon given a name — Dusty — and transported to Possumwood Wildlife, where he’s now receiving the medical care he needs.

“Dusty is now in recovery and is being closely monitored to ensure he heals properly,” the team shared. “He will receive additional fluids and ongoing care, with the hope that he will make a full recovery and, eventually, be released back into his native habitat.”

For now, Dusty is safe, comfortable, and finally on the mend.

Wildcare Queanbeyan praised the quick-thinking workers who spotted Dusty in time and helped make the rescue possible.

“This rescue was a great example of teamwork and quick action,” the group said. “We’re incredibly thankful to the members of the public who called us and to our volunteers for ensuring Dusty’s safety. Rescues like this remind us of the challenges wildlife face in urban environments — and the importance of having people ready to step in and help.”
