Last week in Midtown Manhattan, a passerby stumbled upon an unusual sight — an unattended stroller parked on the sidewalk. Inside wasn’t a baby, but a fluffy senior cat.
Next to her sat a handwritten note that broke everyone’s heart.
“Please find a home for Pumpkin, she is a good cat,” it read. “She warms up to other cats in two weeks. I’m recently homeless, I can’t take care … I’m sorry.”
The Good Samaritan immediately began calling rescues across the city, but one after another said the same thing: they had no room. Finally, they reached out to Animal Haven. Though the shelter was also at capacity, staff couldn’t turn their backs on the little cat in the stroller.
“Although we, too, are at capacity, we simply could not just leave her on a busy Midtown street,” Animal Haven wrote.
A staff member rushed over, gathered Pumpkin up, and brought her safely to the shelter. Though a little frightened, Pumpkin quickly showed her affectionate side.
“It’s clear that Pumpkin was loved,” the shelter shared. “We are heartbroken for her, but also for her person who, facing homelessness, must have felt they had no other option.”
Now safe and cared for, Pumpkin is adjusting to her new surroundings. One week in, she’s showing her gentle, sweet nature and is officially available for adoption.
“So far, she is incredibly sweet, though a little confused about her new surroundings,” said Kristen Kenney, Animal Haven’s director of projects and partnerships. “She is available for adoption and has received some interest!”
Pumpkin’s future is finally looking bright. Until she finds her forever home, the staff at Animal Haven promise to keep her warm, safe, and loved.
“Now, Pumpkin is safe … and we hope she will find a new home soon,” the shelter wrote.
