In the early hours of Thursday morning, a fire broke out in the basement of a home in Ontario, Canada. The family was fast asleep, completely unaware of the danger creeping through their house.

Luckily, Champ was wide awake.

As smoke filled the rooms and flames spread, the alert dog sprang into action. He woke his family just in time, making sure everyone escaped safely.

“Champ saves the day!” Ontario Provincial Police wrote in a post. “[He] alerted his owners and everyone made it to safety […] What a good boy!”

Firefighters soon arrived and contained the blaze, but the story didn’t end there. Once news spread, Champ was flooded with love and admiration from strangers online.

“What a good, good boy! Way to go, Champ!” one person commented.
“Champ, you are awesome,” another wrote.

And it's true.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, but they’re using the close call as an important reminder: not every household has a Champ.

“Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan,” the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department wrote. “When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms will give you early warning so you can get out quickly. Check your smoke [and] carbon monoxide alarms today!”

Champ may be a humble pup, but thanks to his quick thinking and loyalty, his family has a future together — and he’s got all the “good boy” praise in the world to prove it.
