Echo isn’t just Jaime Simpson’s pet — he’s her hero.
A lovable, goofy dog with a heart of gold, Echo brings daily joy to Simpson’s life. But behind his wagging tail and playful energy lies a truly incredible skill: Echo can sense when his mom is in danger.
“He’s always full of surprises — in the best ways,” Simpson told The Dodo.
Echo has been specially trained to detect early signs of Simpson’s epileptic seizures, sometimes even before she feels them herself. His instincts and alertness give Simpson the chance to take medication in time, potentially preventing a full episode.
But one recent day, things escalated quickly.
A Life-Saving Response
Simpson was resting on the couch when a seizure hit suddenly. Before she could act, her body gave way — but Echo was already in motion.
“[He] brought my medication, but it was too late,” Simpson wrote. “Echo barked to alert others that a major seizure was happening. Then he lay across me to keep me from getting hurt.”
By applying gentle pressure, Echo helped protect Simpson from dislocating joints or falling further. His actions were swift, instinctual, and exactly what he’d been trained to do.
Simpson shared a brief video from that episode to both raise awareness of Epilepsy and to demonstrate the important role Echo plays in her life as more than just a pet:
Simpson later watched footage from that moment — emotional, but also affirming.
“I was sad to see how worried he looked,” she said. “But I was so proud. He did everything right.”
More Than a Companion
For Simpson, Echo is far more than a furry friend — he’s a lifeline. His presence has changed her life in profound ways, granting her freedom and peace of mind.
“My family used to worry about me constantly,” she said. “Now, they feel safer knowing Echo is with me. He notices changes they never could.”
Beyond his medical training, Echo is a loving companion. The bond he and Simpson share is deep — built on trust, devotion, and life-saving loyalty.
“I can’t imagine life without him,” Simpson said. “He’s not just my service dog. He’s my best friend.”
