It was an ordinary August afternoon in Missouri when a call came into Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) — someone had spotted a small, fluffy figure hiding dangerously close to a major highway.
Rescuers rushed to the scene, the sound of cars thundering overhead. As they scanned the area beneath the overpass, they finally saw him — a frightened little puppy, peeking out from a patch of weeds by the road.
“A scared little puppy hiding under a highway overpass!” SRSL wrote on Facebook.
The blonde pup lay completely still, pressed against the cold concrete. With no food, no water, and no one around, he watched the rescuers with wide, uncertain eyes — as if hoping someone would finally stop for him.
Despite the chaos of traffic, the SRSL team refused to leave him behind. They spoke softly, coaxing him closer until one of them gently slipped a leash around his neck. Within minutes, the trembling dog was safe inside their van — on his way to a brand-new life.
Back at SRSL’s headquarters, the team gave him a full checkup and plenty of cuddles. Aside from being a little scared and underweight, the pup — a 3-year-old Great Pyrenees mix — was in surprisingly good health.
It didn’t take long for him to land the perfect foster home with George and Vicki Dunn, who instantly fell in love.
“We lovingly call him Remi,” George shared in a Facebook comment. “He’s such a sweet boy and has already come out of his shell. He’s playful, happy, and our family is so excited to have him.”
Now, Remi spends his days running around the yard, soaking up love, and rediscovering what it means to feel safe. Soon, he’ll be neutered and officially ready to meet his forever family — a family that’s already waiting with open arms.
After surviving under a highway overpass all alone, Remi’s life has completely turned around — and this time, he’ll never have to face the world by himself again.
“He is already so, so loved,” wrote Ellen Pendry, Remi’s future forever mom.
