Exploring the Amazonian jungle is always a treat — but for Polar, a mostly-white terrier mix, every hike comes with a unique kind of fanfare.
You can see Polar on his daily hike here:
Polar lives in Madre de Dios, Peru, with his owner, TikTok creator @abychan12 (Abichan), and his fur sibling, Calvin. Together, they love wandering the lowland jungle surrounding their home. But as soon as Polar steps onto the trail, something magical happens.
Monarch butterflies swarm him.
You can watch the butterflies swarm Polar here:
Bright orange wings flutter across his white fur, covering his back and neck as he walks. For a few fleeting moments, Polar looks like he’s wearing a living, dancing crown of butterflies. Videos of the phenomenon, shared on TikTok, have delighted viewers worldwide.
While Polar is friendly, he’s not exactly thrilled with his constant aerial entourage. He shakes off the butterflies, continuing his hike — only for them to return moments later.
The reason, as one TikTok commenter pointed out, is his white fur:
“Butterflies perch on white surfaces… if you wear white around monarchs, they’ll land on you.”
Abichan confirmed the theory, noting that her brown-furred dog, Calvin, never attracted a single insect.
Despite the occasional annoyance, Polar seems to accept his role with grace — or at least tolerance — earning him a fitting nickname from his owner:
“Polar, guardian of the butterflies,” Abichan wrote on TikTok.
