At just 13 weeks old, Colleen has already captured the hearts of everyone at the Humane Society of York County (HSYC) in South Carolina. Outgoing, playful, and endlessly cuddly, she’s the kind of kitten who lights up every room she enters.
When Colleen first arrived, staff noticed something unusual — she had no tail. Whether she was born that way or lost it earlier in life remains a mystery, but one thing was immediately clear: nothing could stop her from being one of the most social kittens at the shelter.
She loves nothing more than bounding around the cat room, snuggling up to every feline friend she meets.
“She’s definitely a playful little gal,” said Vicki, a rescue attendant at HSYC.
One afternoon, while checking on the cats, Vicki stumbled upon a sight so sweet it stopped her in her tracks. Colleen and another kitten, fittingly named Pedro Pascal, were quietly reaching through the bars of their kennels — holding paws.
“It was just so cute, and it looked like they were making a little heart with their hands,” Vicki said.
Unlike the usual rough-and-tumble play, this was different. The two weren’t wrestling or batting paws. They were simply sitting side by side, gently touching, perfectly content in each other’s company.
Though Colleen and Pedro weren’t siblings, they had clearly formed a special connection. But when Pedro found his forever home, Colleen was left behind. Luckily, she hasn’t been lonely for long — her outgoing personality ensures she always has other kittens to snuggle and play with.
Still, Vicki hopes anyone interested in adopting Colleen will consider giving her a companion. “We always tell people … if you’re going to get kittens, you should get two,” she said. “It’s not because we’re trying to push two kittens off on people. It’s because they really just do so much better together.”
Despite being a staff favorite, Colleen keeps getting overlooked as new kittens arrive at the shelter. But Vicki knows how special she is — playful and silly one moment, a total cuddle bug the next.
“She’s kind of the best of both worlds for a kitten,” Vicki said.
Colleen is spayed, up to date on her vaccines, and ready to bring endless love (and maybe even a little paw-holding) to a forever home.
