Dog Saved From Death Row Shows His Rescuer Instant Gratitude

When Schenley Hutson Kirk saw a photo of Gregory, a young beagle on the euthanasia list at Franklin County Shelter & Adoption Center in Ohio, she knew she couldn’t let him die.

Gregory had been found wandering the streets of Obetz, Ohio, and appeared to be a healthy, happy pup. But during his intake exam, he tested positive for heartworm.

Though treatable, the cost of his care meant he was listed as “rescue only.” If no one stepped up by May 3, he would lose his chance at life.

Kirk and her husband, Joe — founders of Hound Rescue and Sanctuary — couldn’t let that happen. Joe took the day off work, drove straight to the shelter, and brought Gregory home.

What they didn’t expect was how quickly Gregory would show his gratitude.

On the long drive to freedom, Gregory’s leash allowed him just enough reach from the backseat to nuzzle Joe’s shoulder.

When Joe snapped a quick photo, the message was clear:

“You saved me. I know you saved me.”

“When I saw the look in his eyes, it was pure thankfulness and love,” Schenley told The Dodo. “It was as if he understood he had been given a second chance.”

Now safe with the Kirks, Gregory is blossoming. He’s affectionate, gentle, and eager to please. He’s already learning commands, loves giving kisses, and seems grateful for every moment of attention.

While he undergoes his month-long antibiotic and heartworm treatment, he’s also enjoying the comforts of being a cherished family member — likely for the first time in his life.

Sadly, many hounds in Ohio never get that chance. “Too often, they’re seen only as hunting dogs,” Schenley explained. “Many spend their lives tied outside, with little affection or care. But dogs like Gregory show just how much love they have to give.”

Thanks to the Kirks and their dedication to saving overlooked hounds, Gregory now has a bright future ahead — one filled with warmth, companionship, and the love he clearly craves.
