Woman Saves Lonely Rabbit By The Lake — Then Discovers Her Surprise

A few years ago, while walking near a lake, Mathilda noticed what looked like a little ball of fur rolling in the dirt. Curious, she stepped closer — and realized it was a rabbit.

To her surprise, the bunny hopped right up to her.

“She came up and asked me to pet her,” Mathilda recalled in a video for The Dodo.

The rabbit’s friendliness told Mathilda this wasn’t a wild animal — she was likely a domestic pet who’d been abandoned. Not wanting to leave her alone, Mathilda scooped the bunny up and carried her home.

Safe indoors, the little rabbit eagerly nibbled on lettuce and carrots.

“We could tell she was really hungry,” Mathilda said.

A vet visit confirmed there was no microchip, so Mathilda decided to make the rescue official. She named the bunny Bun Bun — and gave her a forever home.

But soon, Bun Bun began acting oddly.

She tugged at fabric, nested constantly, and her body seemed to be growing rounder by the day. At first, Mathilda worried she was simply overfeeding her. Then the truth revealed itself.

“The next thing I knew, I just saw three little feet popping up from underneath her belly,” Mathilda said.

Bun Bun had been pregnant all along — and she was now a proud mother of three tiny babies.

Mathilda watched in awe as the newborns grew from pink, wriggly bundles into curious little rabbits with their own personalities.

“I felt so proud,” she said. “I was really happy just looking at them.”

Today, Bun Bun and her three babies all live with Mathilda, filling her home with love and energy. Though she hadn’t planned on four rabbits, she wouldn’t trade them for anything.

“Having these bunnies in my life has made me want to foster more rescue bunnies in the future,” Mathilda shared. “And even start a rescue.”
