A few months ago, Ludwig C. Timm noticed something curious happening just outside his bathroom window in Germany. At first, it seemed minor — a few twigs scattered on the windowsill.
“We thought the wind had blown them there,” Timm told The Dodo. “Then we realized the squirrels were building.”
What began as a handful of twigs soon became a carefully constructed nest — and the perfect spot for the little squirrels to start a family.
For Timm, who happens to be a photographer, their choice couldn’t have been better. It gave him the rare chance to observe and capture the squirrels’ daily lives up close, from busy construction days to tender family moments.
The nest wasn’t just a home — it was also a nursery, and over the months, Timm watched the furry family grow. Among all the moments he’s captured, one stands out above the rest.
The other day, when checking on the nest, Timm spotted a heart-melting sight: several tiny squirrels curled up together, fast asleep in the warm sunlight.
“It was very lucky for me to get that picture,” Timm said. “Usually they’re inside the nest, but it was a hot day, so they napped where I could see them.”
The image might seem simple — just a few squirrels snoozing — but for Timm, witnessing it firsthand felt like striking gold.
And to think, it all started with a few twigs outside his window.
“It’s a very nice coincidence they chose that spot,” Timm said. “We got to see the squirrels grow up.”
