Driver Follows a Gut Feeling — And Finds a Puppy Waiting for Help

Kristin Erwin was on her way home from her sister’s house when she felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to take a detour. It wasn’t a convenient choice — she already had her hands full fostering dogs — but something told her she needed to check a particular road.

That road, sadly known for being a spot where unwanted animals are dumped, tugged at her instincts. “Even though I have plenty of fosters, I couldn't fight the urge to drive down it and see if there were any new victims,” said Erwin, president of the Streethearts Project.

On my way home yesterday I turned down a road thats well known for dumping dogs. Sure enough, as I approached the curve stood a big, friendly puppy 🥺 I called out to see if there were any others but she appeared to be alone. She’s a little underweight and had fleas but I’m hoping she didn’t have to wait too long out here. If no one is looking for her, we’ll get her vetted and find a rescue group to help us find her a family 💜

Moments after turning onto the road, her heart sank. A small, hopeful face appeared in the distance — a puppy chasing after a car ahead of her.

“She was trying to follow the vehicle in front of me but fell behind,” Erwin recalled. “Then she ran beside my van.” With a truck behind her and little room to stop safely, Erwin drove ahead to turn around.

When she came back, the puppy didn’t hesitate. She ran right up to Erwin’s van as if she’d been waiting for her all along.

“She was jumping all over me, so happy,” said Erwin. “When she poked her head into my van, I just gently picked her up and placed her in the crate I always keep in the car.”

The pup, now named Shiloh, was a little underweight and had fleas, but seemed otherwise healthy. With no collar, no tags, and no microchip, it was clear she’d been left behind — but not for long.

Now safe in her foster home, Shiloh is thriving. She’s full of puppy energy, making friends with people and dogs alike, and learning the joys of indoor life.

“She doesn’t realize how big she is and tries to fit her upper half in your lap,” Erwin laughed. “She’s also a bit of a counter surfer, so we’re working on that. But overall, she’s just a really sweet, fun pup!”

Shiloh is currently completing her vet care, including vaccinations, microchipping, and spay surgery. Once that’s done, she’ll be ready for adoption — and a fresh start in a forever home.
