Brian Lee and his wife are no strangers to late-night wildlife visits. The couple, who volunteer with the Ohlone Humane Society, often trap and care for local feral cats, setting up food stations and surveillance cameras in their yard to monitor the feline comings and goings.
But it turns out, the cats aren’t the only ones paying attention.
“We have avocado trees in the yard, and when they start to ripen, raccoons always show up,” Lee told The Dodo. “They’ve figured out we feed the cats, so even though we don’t leave food out overnight, they still swing by — just in case.”
One evening, as a curious raccoon wandered through the yard on his usual food hunt, he unknowingly became the subject of an unintentionally hilarious camera moment. Just as he passed in front of the lens, nature called — in the form of a sudden itch.
“He didn’t hang around long since there wasn’t any food,” Lee said. “But I guess he just happened to have an itch to scratch right in front of the camera.”
When Lee reviewed the footage the next morning, he was greeted with an image of the unsuspecting raccoon mid-butt scratch — caught squarely in the act.
“I didn’t know what to think at first,” he said, laughing. “It was just one of those perfectly timed moments.”
Naturally, he shared the screenshot with his wife and some friends, who all got a kick out of the raccoon’s relatable moment. What started as a tool to monitor the neighborhood cats has clearly become a stage for surprise wildlife cameos.
“It seems like the raccoons wanted a little attention too,” Lee joked. “They’re really stealing the show.”
