No One Wanted This Senior Dog — Until a 100-Year-Old Woman Came Along

When Alice Ensor, an adoption counselor at Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, came across a new adoption application, it seemed routine — until she saw the applicant’s age. Johanna, preparing to celebrate her 101st birthday, was 100 years old and looking to adopt a dog.

“I was a bit surprised,” Ensor said. “It’s not every day we receive an application from someone who’s a centenarian. I immediately knew Johanna must be someone very special.”

While some might hesitate at the idea of someone that age adopting a dog, Johanna’s application eased any concerns. She had a strong support system in place — her daughter Debbie and a dedicated caretaker — and a heart wide open for a senior pup who needed her just as much as she needed him.

That’s when the team thought of Gnocchi.

Gnocchi had come from a difficult past, rescued from a home with 22 dogs. Because of his history, he needed to be the only pet in his next home. While he waited for someone to choose him, the days grew long — and hope faded.

But then Johanna saw him.

A virtual meet-and-greet was arranged so Johanna could see Gnocchi in a home setting. The connection was instant.

“It was love at first sight,” Ensor said. “The next day, we finalized the adoption, and Debbie brought Gnocchi to meet his new mom. He walked in, climbed into her lap, and never left.”

One year later, Gnocchi — now affectionately renamed Gucci — is thriving in his new life. And so is Johanna, who’s about to turn 102.

“He brings me so much joy,” Johanna said. “I love it when he sits on my lap and keeps me company. Having Gucci has given me someone to care for — and that’s made all the difference.”

Every morning, Johanna and Gucci move from the bedroom to their favorite recliner, where they snuggle, watch the news, and enjoy each other’s company. Gucci’s daily walks are handled by Johanna’s caregiver, while Johanna supplies all the love (and treats) a senior pup could want.

“They’re thick as thieves,” Debbie said. “Gucci is spoiled rotten. He’s a couch potato — the perfect match for my mom.”

Gucci waited a long time for a home. Others may have passed him by, but he was simply waiting for the right one. And when Johanna came along, everything finally fell into place.
