In an effort to curb speeding around the city of Bonn, German law enforcement recently set up new traffic cameras to catch drivers going too fast.
What they didn’t expect? Catching someone completely unexpected behind the wheel.
As Bonn Police officers reviewed images from the new cameras, one photo stood out — and not just because the car was speeding. It showed a white vehicle clocked at about 7 mph over the limit, with what appeared to be a dog sitting squarely in the driver’s seat.
Even more bizarre? The pup seemed to be driving with his eyes closed.
At first glance, the image looked like something out of a cartoon. But upon closer inspection, it became clear that the photo was an optical illusion.
The dog was sitting in just the right spot to completely block the view of the actual human driver — making it look like the furry passenger had taken the wheel.
Funny as the image was, it actually had legal implications. Normally, the speeding ticket would have resulted in a fine of around $55, but since the true driver couldn’t be positively identified from the photo, police were unable to issue the citation.
“Here, the driver is very lucky,” a Bonn Police spokesperson told local media.
Thanks to some perfect timing and a well-positioned pup, the driver escaped with nothing more than a humorous memory — and a gentle reminder to slow down.
Let’s just hope this very good dog sticks to being a passenger from now on.
