Shelter Dog Keeps Getting Passed Over Because People Think He Looks ‘Scary’

Biggie has been waiting far too long for someone to see him for who he truly is.

Seven months ago, Biggie was found abandoned. Since then, he’s bounced between a few shelters, hoping to find a family. Now at Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, his friends are doing everything they can to help him — but despite his loving personality and playful spirit, Biggie keeps getting overlooked. Why? Because people think he looks intimidating.

Biggie’s cropped ears — a result of his unknown past — and his large size often scare off potential adopters. But those who know him best see the truth: Biggie is just a big softie who wants nothing more than to be loved.

“He used to run up to the front of the kennel to greet everyone,” said Laura Selvaggio Burban, director of Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter. “Now he just lays on his bed. He gets excited for day trips with staff and volunteers, but when he returns, he just sulks. He’s clearly getting sad.”

Despite all the love he has to give, Biggie is constantly passed by for superficial reasons.

“Someone came in the other day looking for a ‘happy-go-lucky pit bull,’” the shelter shared on Facebook. “We immediately thought of Biggie! But they said, ‘Yeah, we saw him — but his ears are scary.’”

Others have said he’s “too big” or they don’t like his color. Over and over, Biggie hears no — not because of who he is, but because of how he looks.

Biggie doesn’t know he’s supposed to look “scary.” He’s just a sweet soul waiting for someone to give him a chance.

He’s met other dogs and cats and done well with proper introductions. Mostly, Biggie just needs a home where he can relax, decompress, and be his true self.

“He really just needs time to be a dog,” Selvaggio Burban said.

Biggie’s perfect match is out there somewhere — and until they find each other, the team at Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter isn’t giving up.
