12 Realities New Dachshund Owners Must Accept

Ask any dachshund breed owner and you'll find there's no other dog worth owning. Dachshunds are not only one of the most popular breeds in America, but also one of the most lovable.

dachshundsDachshunds are irresistible, charming, impish, and headstrong. Once bred for hunting, the dachshund now occupies thousands of hearts.

If you're new to the world of dachshunds, the first question you have is probably about their short legs and long bodies. This feature makes them truly unique in the dog world.

They are also known as Sausage dogs, Weiner dogs, Doxies or Dashies… they are breed in two sizes, standard and miniature, in a wide range of colors and patterns.

Stubborn dachshund characteristics (making them a little difficult to train) can be traced back to those days spent learning and evolving into being great underground hunters. If they were easily swayed, they couldn't have survived.

If you are considering to own a dachshund, or you’ve just become a new dachshund owner, there are some realities you do need to fully accept.

  1. All of these things are so true my 4 always want to help especially when you’re on the floor at their Level forgetting that they don’t have thumbs! Just wet curious noses!

  2. I get the crating part, how do you take them outside to potty if they cant move on their own? My female miniature has to sniff the ENTIRE yard twice before she goes, and she has to circle around a few times. If not she doesnt just go. Would I hold her while she goes? So far I havent had problems like this but its good to know for future.

  3. Donna g! I’m sorry but your wrong. My most recent one a 7 yd old , has four ruptured discs and his hips, only one was in the sockets. The vet,( an honest one) said you know this surgery is costly and they specialist won’t do a dog wit four.
I took him home with a shot if prednisone and pain pills similar to ibuprofen. Reduces swelling. Took 3 weeks . I sat him down to piddle . He did. Then he staggered and got a foot under him and walked 15 steps. I put him back in the crate. Every day he went a little further. In one more week he RAN across the
Back yard. Every dog takes a different Amy of time. It works !!!! No exceptions if you follow thru!
