When rescuers found a sealed bin outside a rural Texas shelter last Sunday, they expected it to be full of discarded junk. Instead, they discovered something far more heartbreaking — ten newborn puppies piled inside, trembling in the cold.
“They were left in that bin like trash,” said Stacey Silverstein, cofounder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC. “They were just thrown in there — piled like garbage. No care, no respect. Awful.”
The shelter worker who found them had opened the door early that morning to temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Had the puppies remained outside much longer, they likely wouldn’t have survived.
Word of the shocking discovery spread quickly after a volunteer posted about it online. Before long, Leslie Ysuhuaylas, a Texas-based volunteer with Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, stepped in to help.
She rushed to the shelter, picked up the fragile pups, and brought them to a safe foster home where warmth, care, and food awaited.
Despite everyone’s best efforts, one of the tiny puppies didn’t make it. But the remaining nine are holding on, fighting to recover.
“They’re in great hands and receiving medical treatment,” Silverstein said. “One of them is still struggling, so their foster mom carries that little one everywhere she goes.”
The road to recovery will be long. The puppies need time to grow stronger before they can even think about adoption.
But when they’re ready, Silverstein and her rescue partner, Jackie O’Sullivan, plan to bring them to New York City, where loving homes are waiting.
“These babies will never be thrown away again,” Silverstein said.
