Honey the Beagle was surrendered to the SPCA of Niagara County in New York to be euthanized for being overweight. The dog could barely move and had been sitting in her own urine and feces at home. But there’s more to this story than meets the eye.

Her owner had dementia and would forget that she’d already fed Honey. After being fed over and over with no exercise, Honey ballooned to 68 pounds. The elderly woman was convinced the dog’s quality of life was so bad that euthanasia was the only option.

But the shelter workers didn’t agree. Honey was immediately cleaned up and put on a strict diet and exercise plan. She also received meds for hypothyroidism. Within the first week, she lost five pounds!

Since it was so hard for Honey to move, the workers and volunteers put her through water therapy including a water treadmill. Outside, she wore a support to help her walk around. The weight started to fly off of her!

“I was amazed at how fast it happened,” Sue Cable, SPCA volunteer and foster dog mom, told NBC. “Once she was in a home and able to move around in that, she just went.”

The sweet Beagle is just about ready to be adopted. The SPCA staff would like to see her lose about five more pounds before she begins her search for a forever home.

We’re so thankful the right decision was made concerning this amazing girl. She will have gone from such a sad situation to a loving forever home and be in the best shape of her life, and it’s all thanks to the hard work of the nice people at the Niagara SPCA! 🙂
