“I just heard her crying and I couldn’t get to her. I tried really hard, everyone in the neighborhood tried. They were kicking the doors in and kicking the windows out. I couldn’t (get her out). Nobody could.”

Firefighters arrived on the scene moments later. They hurried into the home to save Viviana and Polo. But what they found was something they could only explain as a miracle.

The crew made their way into Viviana’s bedroom. There, the firefighters found Polo lying on top of Viviana. He took his body and, like a blanket, covered Viviana completely to protect her from the flames.

Polo, sadly, didn’t make it. His body was badly burned. The loyal dog sacrificed himself to save his human sister. He lost his life protecting the life he valued above his own.

Erika says:

“She only had burns on her side because of it. He stayed with her the whole time in the bedroom and wouldn’t even come downstairs to get out the door. He was my first baby and now I lost him. And I’m just praying I don’t lose her.”

Viviana, put in a medically induced coma, is undergoing tests. But miraculously, thanks to Polo, she only has burns on one side of her body. She was barely exposed to the flames because the brave dog knew what to do, what he felt he had to do, to save her life.
